Day 1: Patan and Modhera Sightseeing Tour from Ahmedabad

Start your day with a convenient pickup from your hotel in Ahmedabad. Begin your excursion with a drive to Patan, an ancient fortified city established in 745 AD by Vanraj Chavda of the Chavda Kingdom. Patan is renowned for its Patola weaving, an intricate double ikkat technique that has been part of India's textile heritage for centuries. Patola sarees from this region are known for their equal design intensity and vibrant colors on both sides. The art dates back centuries, with origins tied to the 12th century when 700 Patola weaving families from Jalna, Maharashtra, were invited to Patan by King Kumarpal of the Solanki dynasty. The Salvi family, one of the original weavers, continues this tradition, preserving the craft through generations.
Next, visit the iconic Rani ki Vav, a stepwell in Patan exemplifying subterranean architecture in Gujarat. Constructed by Queen Udayamati of the Solanki dynasty, the stepwell features intricate staircases and broad corridors leading down to the water level. It represents a fusion of classical step-well design and a kunda, showcasing the pinnacle of Indian architecture.
Continue your journey to Modhera, home to the Sun Temple, an outstanding example of Indian architecture from its period. Built in 1062 A.D. in honor of the Hindu Sun-God Surya, the temple stands on a high plinth overlooking a deep stone-stepped tank. The edifice is adorned with carvings of gods, goddesses, birds, beasts, and flowers. Constructed by King Bhimdev I, the Sun Temple at Modhera predates the famous Sun Temple of Konark by 200 years and is designed to capture the dawn sun's rays on the image of the sun god during the equinoxes. The main shrine and hall are accessible through a pillared porch. Like the temple of Somnath, the Modhera Sun Temple was also ruined by Mohamed of Ghazni.
